Wild Days – Everest Base Camp

When I was young, I had a dream of achieving a great challenge. This was to come true in the form of a trek to Gokyo Ri and Everest Base Camp.

The trek started at Lukla Airport, which is a small mountain airstrip in the Himalayas. Lets just say it’s the most interesting landing in the world!

We worked our way up to Namchie Bizza (3440 meters), where we had two acclimatisation days to get our bodies used to the altitude. It was here that we got the first glimpse of the majestic Everest (Sagamather in Nepalese), rising above the other mountains in the foreground.

After Namchie Bizza we made our way up through the towering mountains of the Himalayas, which stood like massive cathedral spires keeping an eye on us. We were working our way towards the clear aqua blue lakes and mountains of Gokyo Ri (5500 meters).

Finishing at Gokyo Ri, we made our way across to the majestic, barren land of Everest Base Camp. But to do this we had to climb and cross over the high mountain glacier called the Cho La Pass.

After a few more days of trekking, we made it to Everest Base Camp! The sight was full of colour. From prayer flags to colourful tents set up for those attempting to climb the summit of Everest. You had climbers prepping their kit, sleeping, eating and coming back down from higher camps.

As you looked up towards the Ice Fall, you could see little dots of colour making there way up and down the Ice Fall. These are the sherpas and climbers who where taking kit and supplies to other camps or even the summit.

We made our way back down over the next few days, walking through the now familiar country of Namchie Bizza and onto Lukla. An early morning flight from Luckla to Kathmandu and then a few days later, a fight home to Heathrow.
